Biofeedback Systems
Introduction
We all suffer from stress at times, and often, it seems as though the symptoms are impossible to control. Our heart rate increases, and our muscles become tense. Sometimes our blood pressure rises, and none of these conditions are healthy. They all affect our bodies in a negative fashion, causing us to literally age faster.
For centuries, it has been assumed that these autonomic functions of the body were impossible to control. However, through the development of biofeedback therapy, we can not only gauge our exact responses to stress but also control them.
What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a technique in which people are trained to improve their health by learning to control certain internal bodily processes that normally occur involuntarily, such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and skin temperature.
Using special sensors, these activities can be measured and displayed on a screen. The monitor provides feedback to the participant about the internal workings of his or her body. This person can then be taught to use this information to gain control over these “involuntary” activities.
Biofeedback is an effective therapy for many health problems, but it has been found to be particularly helpful for stress-related conditions and anxiety disorders.
Biofeedback has been used clinically by physicians, physical therapists, psychotherapists and biofeedback therapists for over 40 years. Recently, biofeedback systems have become available for home use and now anyone interested in using biofeedback can do so at low cost.
Biofeedback Computer-Based Systems

Relaxation skills and techniques, despite all the research and press they have received over the years, remain somewhat elusive to understand.
Activities that promote a good relaxation include meditation, yoga, and T'ai Chi. What these activities have in common is that they directly promote the body's natural relaxation response. And, when the relaxation response is promoted on a regular basis, the relaxation response becomes easier to access and stronger. So, those activities that promote a relaxation response, and which are indulged in regularly, actually build up the positive effects of relaxation in the body and directly reduce the stress response.
The activities mentioned above often require years of training before proficiency is gained. This fact is one of the driving forces behind biofeedback in general and biofeedback computer-based systems in particular. Biofeedback therapy greatly speeds up the process of learning to access the relaxation response and biofeedback systems make it fun.
Biofeedback systems feature stunning computer graphics similar to any computer game and in addition they include biofeedback technology, i.e. sensors that measure physiology. And, the output of these sensors are included in the action on the screen. So, for example, instead of opening a door by clicking on it with your mouse, in a biofeedback game you can only perform an action by relaxing better and more effectively. So, not only is the ability to access the relaxation response taught more traditionally in a biofeedback system, it is taught in a fun and interesting way.
Biofeedback computer-based systems appeal to people of all ages. Children and young adults who may not be attracted to other relaxation methods will find computer-based biofeedback systems very engaging.
